Tri City Youth Basketball Association

For many years the YMCA ran a youth bas­ket­ball pro­gram for about 300 boys and girls in the Coquit­lam area in a num­ber of ele­men­tary schools. In Novem­ber of 1999, the YMCA made it known that they would no longer be run­ning a youth bas­ket­ball pro­grams. A meet­ing of con­cerned par­ents, coaches, play­ers and vol­un­teers met at the Pine­tree Com­mu­nity Cen­tre with a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the Coquit­lam Parks and Leisure and Bas­ket­ball BC in Jan­u­ary of 2000 and dis­cussed how to keep youth bas­ket­ball pro­grams in the area viable. Dur­ing this meet­ing it was dis­cov­ered that the city was run­ning their own bas­ket­ball pro­gram for about 100 youth from grades 8 to 12 and a Jr Griz­zlies pro­gram had been run­ning for two years in the Eagleridge area for about 50 grade 4 and 5 boys.

Con­cerned indi­vid­u­als from each group decided to join together and start a new Non-Profit Soci­ety known as the Tri City Youth Bas­ket­ball Asso­ci­a­tion (TCYBA). The first Board of Direc­tors of the TCYBA was formed (see below) after the Gen­eral Meet­ing and met every week for many months with on going help and sup­port from the City of Coquit­lam and Bas­ket­ball BC.

Run­ning the Jr. Griz­zlies pro­gram (now Steve Nash Youth Bas­ket­ball) for all ages, the TCYBA began and con­tin­ues to grow and expand each year.
